Protect Your Teeth!

The P.E. department at Killicomaine JHS strongly encourages all pupils to obtain a mouthguard!

Facts About Tooth Injuries
Half of all children will suffer a traumatic injury to a tooth by the time they leave high school. Injuries range from minor chips and cracks to teeth knocked out of the socket.
Sports activites, cause the greatest percentage of traumatic injuries.
Males have traditionally suffered traumatic tooth injuries two to three times more often than females, but this is changing.
A tooth that is knocked out can be reimplanted, treated with a root canal procedure and last for many years if the tooth is kept moist in milk or liquid and treated quickly.
The number of traumatic tooth injuries could be decreased if more children wore custom made mouthguards during sports activites.

Mouthguards can prevent serious injuries such as:
Lacerations to lip, cheek and chin
Fractures of the facial bones especially the check bones and jaw bone which can cause facial deformity
Possible permanent injury to the jaw joints
Broken teeth
Tooth knocked out or displaced from its socket
Concussions
Cerebral hemorrhages
Incidents of unconsciousness
Neck injuries by helping to avoid situations where the lower jaw gets jammed into the upper jaw
Preventing laceration and bruising of the lips and cheeks, especially for those who wear orthodontic appliances
Young children, in particular, often sustain damaged or dislodged teeth, fractured jaws and lacerated lips when participating in sports.

Fact:
The highest incidence of all sport-related injuries
occur in the 10-19 age group

A dental advisor from the local area health board gave an indepth talk on mouthguards to Year 8 pupils.
During September and October, any 8th year pupil can have a mouthguard made for just £5.
This is a saving of at least £20.
This offer has been running for several years - and hopefully will continue to run in future years
All pupils need to do is make an appointment to see their own dentist before the end of October.
