Halloween at the
Ulster American Folk Park

In October 2007 all the 8th year pupils went on a school trip to the Ulster American Folk Park in Omagh.

It was quite a long bus journey to get there but was well worth the visit.

Outside the main centre we were divided into lines and our guide told us what we would be seeing on our tour. He then took us inside the centre where there was a souvenir shop, a restaurant and toilets. The guide took us to our first stop which was a model of the immigrant ship on which Irish people sailed to America a long time ago. They were trying to make a new life in America as times were very difficult in Ireland and a lot of people were starving because of the famine. It was not very nice inside and there wasn't much space. Many people took ill and sometimes died because of the bad conditions on board and did not always reach America.

We also went into various small shops which showed us how things were in the olden days.

In some of the cottages we visited we were given samples of food to taste such as pumpkin pie and champ.

The fun things which we did were barn dancing, pulling apples with our mouths from a long piece of string, ducking for apples and ducking for sweets in a bowl of oats.

We also threw a piece of apple skin behind us to see what shape of a letter it made. That letter was supposed to be the initial of the name of the person you would marry.

The more educational side was also fun.

The Ulster American Folk Park was a really good trip to take at Halloween time.
