Class
8D had an enjoyable and educational morning in the Fergus Hall,
Portadown, at an exhibition entitled, 'Life on the Canal', about
the Newry Canal and the lives of people, who lived and worked by
the canal in past years.

|
Characters
in period costume told stories of their lives : 'Mrs Breakwater'
explained how she and her family controlled the lock-gates
and in fact pupils were given the opportunity to operate an
interactive model and see how a barge or lighter made its
way along the canal.

|
'Harry',
the lighterman, told of his work on the barge and a life-like
model of a barge was part of the exhibition. Pupils also examined
artefacts like the horse's bridle, the ropes and goods such
as coal, which were transported along the canal at the time.
